Has anyone ever tried to convert a kit like this into usable rolling stock for a 3-Rail? I'm trying to find some European flat cars to pull behind MTH's European steamers. Unfortunately MTH has not released any European flats.

I'm a two railer, but I did buy a couple of these kits with the same idea; however, I wanted this specific prototype, and it still is a lot of work, as they were designed to be static models and do not run on 0 ga track [ think Protot 48 ].
In my opinion there's a better solution: Many ex-US Army flats went into European rail service after the World Wars; do a photo search for SSkm 49 and you'll see what I mean. You can just add buffers and some details to "domestic" flats.....
Best, SZ
I was afraid that would be the answer. Better to confirm my suspicion here rather than plunk down $40 and a whole lot time to confirm it. The SSkm 49 is an interesting thought, but I was hoping to find or build a flat to haul WWII equipment like Tiger or Panzer tanks.
Any thoughts on what cars or flats might make for a good starting point to build a flat similar to the Panzer Platformwagen?
I've built a few Euro and/or UK freight cars from scratch. I made buffers from tube stock and thumb tack heads. They didn't function but looked right. I made wheel bearings from brass stock and used some static model parts for axle support. Seems a few flat cars would not be tough to build.......not $40 for sure!

1. In that case I would plunk down the $40 [ I think you can find it for less ] and use it as a pattern to build your own. I have no idea how you would do the trucks especially w/ hi flanges. You might have to tinker with the body dimensions [ height ] to get the right look.
2. Tigers required a six axle flat due to their weight, which was a stretched version. Just search SSyms for photos, etc.
Have fun.

I agree with AMCDave. Flatcars and fairly easy to make and the photo is fairly detailed. You could make some. The trucks might take a bit of work but it should be possible to rig up something realistic.
