Honestly, I didn't think I would ever ask for help on such a simple issue as a tack replacement. Until I got my hands on some parts, and mixed in is what I believe might be MTH parts with Lionel - that's my best guess. So to the question, what kind of tack would be used on the armature on the left? The one on the right I am quite certain is Lionel.

How about gluing a small steel washer on with E 6000 glue after roughing up the plastic? You can find a washer with the same outside diameter and 1/8 inch inside diameter hole at ACE hardware or local hardware store.

Alternatively, cut off the nub, drill a small hole and insert a real thumbtack.

Huh. Beats me!
And I'm not 100% certain the one on the right is from Lionel... the lip around the flat surface where the tack goes is unusual.

Well the one on the right does not have any info stamped on it, so you could very well be correct. I'm wondering if the one on the left could be from Menards, but I have never had occasion to do any coupler repair on a Menard's coupler - trucks yes, coupler/armature no.
I looked at a couple of my Menards cars. The 9.5 inch flatcars have a nub on the arm that a metal disk fits on.
Well that surely looks like the critter. So much for buying just the tack, I'ma thinkin that Menards doesn't sell parts?
