I realize this topic seems to be a recurring one and correctly assumed that sooner or later it “would be my turn”.

The attached photo is of a bronze (brass?) drive gear from my WBB L&N FA-1. The gear is clearly cracked. I’ve read in past threads that some of you reattach the gear using some sort of premium adhesive like one of Loctite’s products but, how robust is reattaching the gear in that manner? Wouldn’t it be better to simply replace the gear if one of the same size can be found?

If replacement is optimal, any suggestions for where I might look. Bachmann seems to be pretty much out of any meaningful Williams parts these days.

Thanks,

Curt

Replacement is best. No idea who has Williams parts now as I believe both who had acquired them from Williams have now passed and as you have found out Bachman doesn't really support Williams.

If it was mine I would try and solder it together assuming is pure bronze and not oilite.  Then reinstall it with a retaining compound. If you don’t try and close the crack it will bind at that spot as tooth spacing is now different.

I figured I’d better hedge my bets and place my order before providing a link - just in case they only had one left. 😉

Here is the link:  https://nwsl.com/

The NWSL part number is 2932-6.

They make gears. If they run out they just make more. If you have a special need and can’t find a gear they will make it for you if you have an example or accurate description.
