cruise commander and fan driven smoke unit

Picture of smoke unit would help; but typically the answer is yes.  On lionels basic fan smoke unit, they had a solder trace you could remove to allow independent AC input to the DC Fan motor circuit.  Hence the 2 red or brown AC inputs.  The rest of the circuit uses a common ground so just one black wire, plus the body of the smoke unit also acts like a ground.  IF that trace is bridged you only really need one red.  When smoke unit gets power so does the fan circuit.  G

You need a TMCC smoke unit. Power input to the board controls the heating element and 5v for the fan. That's what I used in my Weaver E8s w/ ERR. Works wonders. Though you have to change the heating element to 26ohm. I ordered all the parts from Lionel service.

6308031200 is the smoke unit and picked up the 8104566201 smoke funnel both are for a lionel tmcc f3 Alaska to be exact on where I found the parts ordered them from lionel and they came in yesterday.  the engine I am trying to put it in is a Williams f3 Santa fe yellow bonnet. I upgraded it to tmcc the day I got it a year or so ago.  Then last week added the rail sounds, and now going to try to add the smoke unit I bought the unit just for this conversion. I'm also thinking of doing a fixed pilot on it with a kadee in the front.  it's the yellow bonnet to the left I have ABBA  the other is a rail king ps 2.0 version

The Lionel smoke unit with the 27 ohm resistor just connects directly to the Cruise Commander smoke output and ground, job done.  If you want a physical smoke on/off switch, route it through a switch.

Thanks, then the $64,000 question is can all this be done, Command, sounds, lights, couplers and smoke, to a Lionel Conventional Classics F3 with dual Pullmor motors?

You bought the wrong one John, you can change the resistor and use that one.

Mike, everything but smoke will obviously fit, I'd have to see how stuff fits before I'd say smoke would fit.

What I did was purchase the one for a tmcc f3 with smoke     6-24523 thinking that one would work I wonder would my old one from the challenger work ?? 610-8057-200 fan driven smoke unit/ rectangular /27 ohm element

Yes, that one would work quite well.

Just change you element to 22 to 27 ohm and your good.  Like I said, the first 2 pins from the right are AC center rail. One for Heater and one for smoke fan DC circuit.  IF you check continuity on those 2 pins without harness and it reads 0 ohms, you only need one of the wires to go to the ERR board hot.  The black to common.   G

Even if he uses these smoke units. Beside the resistor. Don't they need to be have mods perform.

Fiberglass around resistor?  Wadding and pcb hole?

They don't "need" any mods, but if you want more smoke, there are things you can do.  For diesels, you probably don't want "steam-like" smoke.

I thought most of the early tmcc smoke units had issues....with anemic smoke output?

The same smoke unit that I'm looking for a parts breakdown. I know lionel has the element. But, trying to find out the motor that will fit?

You're trying to replace the fan motor on the smoke unit?  I use MTH smoke motors on these since I have them and they work just fine.  MTH part BE-0000041

John, looking to see if a gasket was used on this unit. I've used the mth motors and have had good luck with them.

Hi, Can you add a smoke unit to Lionel's Postwar celebration F-3's? I have the abba Canadian pacific with the powered A and B and the A and B dummies that have the audio. I haven't found much info on wether you can just plug one into this board or not. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

While the LCRU2 does provide a smoke unit, it uses a very small triac to drive it.  I suspect that fan driven smoke on that output would overload it.  You'd probably have to add a relay to handle the full smoke unit current.
