Any idea how much variety is in the various PS2/3 sound sets as far as steam sounds is concerned?  I'm down to just two PS2 steamers (a RK Ten-Wheeler and a Hudson) and the steam sounds are very similar. At one time we had 4 or 5 MTH steamers and they almost sounded the same when running. The whistles were somewhat different but not much difference in the chuffing. Is this the norm?

On the other hand, with our Lionel steam, each locomotive has its own unique sound when running.

To be clear - I like our MTH steam and look forward to acquiring a newer model with PS3 someday. We also have a PS3 HO Mohawk and the Gauge 1 (PS2) Virginian Triplex - both unrun at this point. Am anxious to try them out someday to hear what they have....

the sound set for an articulated locomotive has the two sets of cylinders going into and out of phase at slower speeds.  I have one sound set in an ancient but upgraded-to-PS2 Lionel #736 Berkshire, which has every fourth chug sounding different, as if the valves in the steam engine needed adjusting.

AS far as variety is concerned, not nearly enough IMO.    All of my steam engines have an almost identical startup and shutdown sounds.  I'm double hosed, because most of my engines are PRR and the whistles and bells are also almost identical in most cases.  Same story with the F and E EMD diesels, but you would expect some of that.

As mentioned above, the articulated engines have a different chuff for different cylinder phase, but the basic engines sounds are pretty standard.   The proto effect dialog is pretty similar as well.  Passenger engines seem to have different city names, but the freight engines are related to either some idiot pouring water on his feet, or two dopes moving  tree off the rails.    No joke.   IMO if they're going to be this bad, they should at least be funny:

"Hey, put down that bong and pay attention!!!"

"Whatever, man....."

All in all, my biggest complaint of Protosound in general.   I need to get my TIU hooked up to my computer and download some new sound sets.

I don't have enough MTH engines to notice how similar they are. My only complaint about their sounds is the barely audible chuff sounds. In some cases they are nearly drowned out by the background sounds of the air compressor and steam generator. Other than that I find the crew and tower talk more varied than Lionel's.

Pete, I think that may be controllable.  I don't recall if "accent sounds" affects chuffs.

Chuffing and compressors and coal shoveling are only a portion of the sounds of a real steamer.  Stand near one running slowly and enjoy the cacophony of clanks and clunks, hisses and huffs.  But you'll never hear voices from inside the cab.  I would prefer MTH use the sound memory for better loco sounds and forget "Like a Baldwin" etc

I am no PS2 expert for sure but I did try and change engine sounds volume and both the compressor and chuff changed equally. The recent NYC Mohawks were so unbalanced in this area (compressor to chuff) that they offered a custom replacement sound set to those who complained about it. It was a marked improvement.  In general though MTH chuff volume seems muted compared to Lionel and replacement speakers don't seem to help much. Maybe current PS3 will correct that.
