I want to cut some hardboard to make an ice edge to run along my layout. I have a 4x8 sheet and want to cut into 5" x 8' strips. Can anyone tell me how to do it? I have a jig saw and a circular saw.
Clamp a straight board on to the sheet with several board underneath. Use the top board as a guide to whichever saw you decide to use. A circular saw may be your better choice for staying straight.
Rockler, Home Depot, Woodcraft all carry straight edges in different lengths that clamp onto a 4'x8' 1/2" or 3/4" sheet. They work very well if the base your cutting on is fairly stiff. The best system I've used is Festool, but way too costly to just cut masonite. Check out DeWalt or other brands that have an end clamp device.
Buy a guide like this . With thin stuff like masonite, its best to put a 2x4 under the guide, and another 2x4 under the board on the opposite side of the cut, to give yourself a solid surface to run the saw down. Use the circular saw to cut it with a fairly high tooth count blade.
