IMG_3009IMG_3012IMG_3014IMG_3015IMG_3016IMG_3019IMG_3020IMG_3023Went to a train show saw this nice 211 Alco with a perfect chassis  horn with no battery damage  and all for $45.00 . it had a broken skirt not only that but completely gone side skirt  .. so their was No way to add a bottom piece as I have done in the past.

When  I bought it I bought a used power pickup that happened to be from a GP Lionel postwar the pickup was used and  I was only going to have my time  to fix the unit  , But since I had the extra part I always thought of modifying a Alco  unit that the 3 step pile might work , and the results are for you to see I really like it it turns on corners as do our F3  and Gp

The gp pilot  part was wedge cut and the metal truck tabs where bent  so it was able to sit underneath and be glued in .

I'm thinking of adding some grab arms, ladders plastic windshields and lens for the headlight from the 2343 F3  what  do you think leave a lone or keep adding..  Only problem I have is now I have to make the dummy unit.. (lol) daniel

Well first off, I think you have a fine looking layout. Nice scenery. Though the track isn't "Super 0." I guess you could call it Super Tubular 0.

I too like the Alco FA's as they look right at home on a smaller layout with smaller traditionally sized rolling stock. Sure, it would have been nice if somewhere along the line, one of the train makers had put some tooling dollars into another diesel model, though similarly proportioned as the Alco FA. But they didn't.

So that's a challenge you had there. A Lionel F-3 truck pilot would be way to big, even if there was an easy way to affix it to the Alco truck. Scratch building a pilot to fit on the truck (Lionel F-3 style) would be an undertaking too. Or if you had a beat up shell with rear body damage, but a good solid filled pilot, you could cut that off and with bracing, attach it to the front of the on topic shell. All options though would be lots of work.

So what you did was a rather nifty and easy solution. Good job. You don't really notice it so much as illustrated in your second photo versus the first photo.

I guess you could say this is a case of Alco FA meets EMD BL2. Given some of the goofs Lionel has recently made, you could just say this is a newly cataloged Alco FA. With the liabilities of foreign production, anything is possible.

One thing for sure: It is certain no visually worse than the notorious "high-water" Alco that Lionel offered in 2009. Given a choice based on purely visual aesthetics (excluding open frame AC motor versus DC can motor), I'll take what you did with your Alco.

Here's a clip of it running your right if you don't point it out to someone it looks as if belongs, for me I like the way it swivels around the curves like the big boys..lol

Again  just bend sown the side tabs  cut  the GP pilot    sort of like a V and glue in . on this proto I 'll  see if the glue holds up (super glue ) or need to add two rivets

Think the grab handles and or ladders would be too much?  ...daniel
