During breaks from benchwork/table construction, I'm looking into power & control systems for my layout.  I have a TMCC "starter kit", a KW that I refurbished a while back, and an old Lionel 1033, also refurbed.  But that's insufficient for a complex layout running newer product.  I have only 2 or 3 MTH locomotives (and they are probably the least important of my inventory).  Everything else is TMCC or conventional (Atlas, Lionel, 3rd Rail).  Anything conventional will probably be converted to TMCC using the 3rd Rail ERR components.  With MTH apparently liquidating, it looks like installing DCS will require finding a TIU and controllers on the used market, as none of the "usual suspect" resellers appear to have anything in stock.  Should I be expending effort on spotting a DCS acquisition opportunity or should I just plan on executing a new Legacy/TMCC system and convert my few MTH locos to ERR TMCC?  Being a mostly retired electrical/electronics engineer, I have no hesitation to take on conversions/interfacing etc.

I've heard the DCS may still survive afterwards. Assuming you are running them in conventional now.

Of course as long as it works, why worry, if you have problems, then examine the options then.

However my biased suggestion would be to pickup a DCS explorer which can handle 3 engines at once. They are out there for sale near 150$ or less. It interfaces with a phone or tablet, but use a modern Lionel PH180 or Z1000 for power to it. Some don't like the tablet or phone interface, but myself, not ever having the handheld think it's great.

Cheers
