I have an MTH PS2 Engine.

Each time I power up my transformer, I have to ADD ENGINE in order to control it via Remote.

Upon FINDING it, it assigns an ADDRESS, but the NAME is blank.

As long as I do not power the transformer down, I am able to operate the Engine and make adjustments to the settings (Sound, etc).

However, as soon as I power everything down, nothing is there the next time I power up the transformer and the remote.

I have to go through the ADD ENGINE process all over again.

I have tried FEATURE RESET, FACTORY RESET, RECOVER LOST ENGINE, but none of those have resulted in a lasting solution.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Stupid question, I know, but is there another engine on the track?

The reason I'm asking is that I had similar weird-ness recently and it was down to and address conflict.   I had an engine in a consist that wanted to be a certain address, but the engine I was trying to add had that address.  Once I did some manual addressing, life was good.  Again, I had the same symptoms with getting an address but no name in the remote.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I am about to head downstairs to do some checking.

The "weird-ness" happens  on both my layout as well as on my test track.

I will test the battery and connections on the engine as well as the strength of the batteries in the DCS remote.

And...I absolutely concur with getting a BCR-2. I just got the engine for Christmas so I am working with what I have. Assuming there is not another issue that would result in my returning/exchanging the engine, I will be ordering a BCR-2 in the near future.

After testing both the battery in the Engine (Battery: Hi) and the batteries in the remote (as is: 5.75v; newly installed: 6.25v), the issue remains.

After testing the batteries and changing the Engine Address to "2" and named the Engine, I turned off the Remote, but left the Transformer on. When I turned the Remote back on, the Engine was listed and responded to the Remote.

When I turned both the Remote and the Transformer off and then powered both back on, the Engine was not recognized and was moved to the Inactive list, even after doing a READ. I had to go through Adding the Engine again in order to gain control of it. This gave me both the newly added Engine without any name, as well as the listing under Inactive Engines which I had saved before shutting down the Remote and the Transformer.

So does it still sound like a battery issue, or do I need to check something else?

Which model is this? If this is a PS-2 3V your battery is not connected or you have a BCR installed.  When you turn off track power with the engine running, does it play shutdown sounds?  I am guessing it is not.

Check the battery connector to make sure it has not pushed a pin out of the black connector.  Make sure the 2 pin plug is all the way in the PS-2 board.  If all that is ok and the battery is good, you may have a defective battery circuit.  That can be repaired in most cases.  G

That was it!!! Thank you so much!

As you described, it did not play shutdown sounds when powered off with engine running.

The first time I checked the battery connection, I failed to look as closely as I did this time. Upon pulling the 2-pin battery connector apart, it was obvious that the red pin had been pushed back ever so slightly, but enough to not make the connection!

I tried several shut-downs and power-ups, and everything was working as expected.

Again...Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You helped my wife and I to celebrate her Christmas present to me all over again!!!

Delta14Sierra,

This is Charlie 1 Delta, glad your wives Christmas present is running well now,

got a Meadow River Lumber Company Shay engine from my wife for Christmas also,

I do understand what you meant about her wanting to see everything work correctly & celebrate, some wives actually do care about how things turn out for us.

Merry Christmas

PCRR/Dave
