John,Thanks for sharing and Chris for posting!!!!!
The truck sideframes in the second pic look pretty good to me.
Still waiting on my NYC unit

UPS came at 5:30 - As promised!! here are pictures that I just took of my UP DD35A powered and non-powered. I also took pictures of my SP DD35A powered my non-powered has not been received yet. I will write my thoughts later or tomorrow the latest.

Thanks for the pictures, but where are the videos of this monster?!
I will not be able to run until the weekend or after new years because I am away and not at my house. Sorry!! I hope everyone is happy with the pictures.

My first impression is RailKing detail model like not Premier but maybe I am wrong - I will let you all decide on that one and no fighting - lol
Matt,
Great photo set. First impression is that somebody nailed it when saying the truck detail looked poor - in a word, Railking - but other details look good.

Matt,
Thanks for pics, after seeing your pic of the truck sideframes, they're not very well detailed at all. I'll be waiting to hear a review of what you think about the sounds and how it runs!

I have to disagree with you guys on this one. The sideframes are very well exacuted. There is a lot of detail there. I think I know why the comments. The detail looks flat, not enough releif in the detail. Look closely at the trucks on the real one, its looks 'flat' also. The massive castings for the 4 axle trucks was thicker than the trucks of a 2 axle GP unit, so the bearing don't protude as much, making the truck details flat.
I think Lionel got the detail right.

hello guys and gals.......
this engine ONLY has 8 wheel drive out of 16 wheels not good, as the athrean H.O scale DD-40 has a full 16 wheel drive and few hundred dollars cheaper. the real DD-35/DD-40 has full 16 wheel drive or 8 traction motors.

You just wrote the same thing on another thread. and i'll give you the same answer again. It would not run on most layout curves with 16 drive wheels.
Hello Jim1939........
yes it CAN ,if the scale big boy did then why can this diesel can't ? the bottom line is this all you guys (buyers of this diesel) deserve better than what lionel is offering but again if your'e happy the way its made then more power to you and i wont say another word about it ok guys.

The (scale) big boy and this diesel are 2 completly different models. Making this engine 16 wheel drive would cost more and be pointless it pulls like a mule and looks good
Wow...........quote:Originally posted by Tiffany:

Happy New Year Everyone!!
My DD35As are really starting to grow on me and I have not even been able to run them yet because I have not been home.
Did anyone else purchase the non-powered units?

I uploaded a video of my DD35A. I have a couple more to upload and then I will give my review and issues I'm having with them rolling through my Ross switches.

Ok, I am already having issues with my DD35s. I am going to list below. I am very disappointed in Lionel as almost every time I purchase one of their engines I always have some issue where it has to go back.
1. With both engine and non-powered unit connected together back to back I have an issue when ever I pass through my Ross Switches. The issue I noticed that I am having is that the fake wheels (4th set)are sloppy so it hits both center and outer rail causing my Z4000 to short out and trains stop running. I was able to temp. resolve this issue by putting black tape around the fake wheels so that it does not short out when touching both rails.
2. The front coupler on non-powered unit has trouble releasing as if the motor is not strong enough. I tried oil but that didn't help. So it looks like it will have to go back for repair. I was able to get it open but once I close it it will not release by using the electronic method.
3. I noticed that when the engines are running around the track you see a bouncing affect as if one or a couple of the wheels are uneven.
I have a MTH DDA40X powered and non-powered that is longer then the DD35s and never have any issues running through all of my switches so that goes to show you that MTH has done much better with there engines then Lionel did on these DD35s.
Has anyone noticed the bouncing when these DD35 engines are moving around the track?? I have all Gargraves with Ross switches (min 072)

I just want to make it clear that I am not looking to start a bashing thread I just want help and suggestions and to see if anyone else noticed any of these issues I am having??

That is cool.
Matthew - I have no bouncing. Also, it goes through all my switches (all 72") fine, but then I have only Fasttrack and you sort of expect that . . .
Oh, and yes - eight wheels or not, it runs fine through 72", 60" and 48" curves with no problem. It will not run on 36" (catalog says 42" minimum and I guess they mean it).

If the DD's were built for the UP, except for the 3 DD35's for the SP, why did EMD have a GP35-2 DD35's-GP35 demo set?

Because they wanted to demonstrate the new 35 series locomotives to the american railroads.

Tiffany! I just took your advice and picked up an athearn dd-40 on ebay for hudreds less. Its awesome, 16 wheel drive, but no matter what I do it won't run on three rail track and I'm having a heck of a time modifying it to accept an O-guage electrocoupler!
hello RickO........
just super glue the electrocoupler on the roof of each end and you be fine

Matt - Is the 4th set of wheels plastic? I always thought MTH was cheap and did this on my MTH DDA40X however I now realize that while going through my 072 curves (min radius for this engine) that the plastic wheels actually leave the outer rails and extend toward the inner rail (they may actually touch the inner rail).
The bouncing effect is because the holes in the wheels were drilled off center.
Does your MTH DDA40X pull lots of cars good? Mine seems to struggle compared to my AC4000 with the same load. I'm not sure if this is due to the design of the trucks or having only one power pickup per truck. My DDA40X also gets stuck on back to back lionel 072 switches at low speed.
^Sorry for the thread hijack
Where are the videos of the DD35 pulling lots of cars?

Thanks Lee!! Fasttrack has thicker tubular rails then Gargraves so that might have something to do with a smoother run.

Hi Matt, I just checked my DDA40X and noticed that it has some sort of plastic non conductive metal 4th set of wheels. I double checked with a wire meter and it showed me that they were not conductive. I checked out the Lionel DD35s and noticed that it's 4th set of wheels were metal and were very conductive so MTH was smart by making them non conductive. I am sure this is going to be a huge mistake by them as I am sure I am not going to be the only one with these problems. I also noticed how much those 4th set of wheels overhang off the rails when passing through reg. switches and even 080 curves. I don't think the problem is that it touches both outer and inner rails on regular track but only when passing through my reg. Ross switches because the inner and outer rails get very close to each other on the switches near the frog.
As for the pulling power with my MTH DDA40X I have 36 cars behind the engine and non-powered DDA40X and pulls with very little problems even when moving up my 3% grades. I love the MTH models especially now realizing how they perform over the new Lionel DD35s.
Here is a video of my MTH DDA40X engine pulling a lot of cars.
http://youtu.be/WkR77FqpryA
I will make a video of the Lionel DD35s pulling the same cars and see if the 35s have any issues as I have not even tried this yet.
