I'm hankering for a GG-1 as I start trains again after many years absence.   Hmmm...GG-1...its always been a favorite of mine.  As I look at the inventory available I note there are true scale and a truncated scale examples of this engine because it was as big as an ocean liner.  Since I'm a bit of a purist the truncated example kind of puts me off especially as the engine in real life was so majestic and I would want to enjoy that full majesty in the yuuuge true scale example.  I've figured a way I can cram a small 072 track into my Christmas layout so I think I'll go BIG and go for the 20" long engine.  Now to find one at a good price.

FOXER55,

Take a look at my for sale posting on 10/13.   I would have contacted you privately,  but you have no contact information listed in your profile.   It will be tough to buy anything from anyone here on the Forum without contact info.    If you wish to contact me about my posting,  please use the email address in my profile.

Thanks,

Nick

Thanks.  Message sent.

The William's scale shell is plastic, and other than brass offerings, is unique in that all other GG1's in 3 rail O have cast metal bodies.  If you operate DCS or Legacy then a choice of GG1's from those manufacturers definitely makes sense over a conventional William's.   I own 2 scale MTH GG1's, one with PS3 and the other upgraded with ERR.   The PS3 features, upgraded casting and improved sound add a bit of excitement to the boring operation of an electric.  Unless you plan on pulling 50-100 car consists, you will never need a helper GG1.   That's not to say you won't desire another, and another, and another.  The latest from Lionel is due out soon.

I have had no problems at all upgrading a Williams to TMCC But if your going to upgrade I would look for a Williams previous scale GG1 as personally I can't see spending $450 - $600 for a engine and your not going to use there Sound system. I have 4 of the Williams Scale GG1 from last marketing before they added there new sound system. and unless I missing something from pics I can't see any difference appearance wise so to me I can not see the increase for there sound system to it, especially if your going to put TMCC in it or Proto 2/3 as I don't think you can use that sound system with it. The difference in sound between plastic and cast I don't know as haven't heard from a cast engine. I also was unaware that they all where cast metal not plastic except Williams. But does make sense.

I'm dying to know where I can buy some of that small 072 track.

Balshis,

I'm going to stuff that 072 into every corner of the living room I can.  I'd run the thing under the couch if I could but those GG-1 pantographs make that impossible.  If I do find some of that track I'll let ya know.

Bill,

If I may, I have a few questions.  When you say Williams, from your experience would this example be a good option:

"Williams 41850 O Scale Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 Electric - Conventional 3-Rail with True Blast Plus(R) Sound - Williams™ #4859. Features include: True Blast® Plus 16-bit polyphonic sound including electric locomotive sounds, horn, and bell,  6 wheel power trucks with traction tires , powered by dual motors with flywheel coasting action , all metal gears , electronic 6-amp reverse board with directional lock-out , durable ABS plastic shell , die-cast trucks, truck sides, and pilots , dual headlights , twin operating pantographs , add-on stamped metal ladders , add-on grabrails and window bars."

I'm still a neophyte at this and need some help.  Is a Williams really that good?

Thanks.
