I think that some of the Demos being offered are pretty nice looking----some nice colors and designs. I am wondering how the railroads treated them and how the manufacturer reciprocated. Are there records out there that would list when and for how long a model would visit a railroad? Specifically,I wonder if the E6 ever rode the rails of the PRR pulling some passenger cars.

For the PRR , early Diesel Demonstrators info can be found in the books "Black Gold, Black Diamonds: The Dieselization of The Pennsylvania Railroad" by Eric E. Hirsimaki. Vol.#2 concentrates on the demonstrator performances. The dust cover back has EMD color sketches of proposed E3 units.
Fyi Conrail bought EMD #1,2,& 4 SD60's as well as #8000 & # 8001 SD80's.
Demonstrators are becoming a significant part of my locomotive inventory. I guess I have about 14 now (all MTH or Lionel)...oops!...make that 15, 'cause I picked up another one at Mercer Junction yesterday. Any era and any builder...all are welcome.
I wish the mfgs/ importers see these colorful units as attention getters and good sellers. With that in mind, why can't those same mfgs/ importers paint some of their models already tooled into demo schemes on their next runs? Models like:
EMD SW1, NW2, E6, F7, FP7, MP15, SD80, ALCo FA-2, RS11, GE U25B, BLW VO 1000, FM H-15-44, C-Liners?
