Refinishing a brass tender has a few dents! Should I live with it or back it with a dolly and tap with a flat surfaced hammer? Don

You and rub (burnish) it out on a block of hard wood and a popsicle stick , (or a jewelers burnishing tool if you have one) , Unless your a trained metal smith you may make it worse pounding around on it.. Its not that bad, the real engines and tenders got dented
I cannot see any dent. Leave it be.
I would do it as Dave suggests though you might need a smooth steel curved tool rather than the wooden stick like the side of small pliers. Depends on how thick the brass is. Don’t pound it and make sure no sharp edges touch it.

Agree with above, definitely no pounding at all,….looks to possibly be an outty dent??….if so, I’d put a small hard block of wood behind it, and just use my fingers to gently push on the brass clamping the block of wood with only my hands & fingers,….if it needs burnishing, again agree with above, tool must be round, very light pressure only sneaking up on protrusions ……doubt you’ll ever be able to completely 100% remove the dent, but you should be able to make it less dramatic, …..also first reply is very correct, ….locomotives are work horses, …dents, dings, gouges, scratches, patches, repairs, part of their character,…..

The dents are outties probably caused by the lose weight inside bouncing around in the mail ! I am only going to work on the largest one and live with the rest! Thanks for the advice. DON
I would put a wood block of appropriate size inside, wider than the dent, and gingerly tap flat using another appropriate wood block ,dent size, on the outside. You'll need a vice to hold the inner block. Should not be too hard to do. If you are not mechanical get someone else to do it.
Good Luck
Your photo either doesn't do justice to your dent, or, if it does, you have nothing to worry about.
put it in the sun on a hot day then hold a piece of dry ice on it
Put piece of oak on both sides, tighten with c-clamp-- worked just fine!! Thanks for all the help!
Great !
might I ask what engine it goes with
