as far as prototypes go, i like the chrysler building better than the empire state, but for these models, i think the empire state looks better in brian's photo because it is just a shade taller and is thicker on the lower portions of the building.  i would love to have either of these, but they sure would look odd next to a three story building.

maybe i should get both and put them near to each other and as far away on the layout as i can.

I am not sure.  I know you can filter based on category.  I think dept 56 is in home and kitchen.  You would still have to go through a lot of pages even with the filter for some categories.  I believe yesterday they had a christmas diner and a grinch item as well as some scenery and a horse drawn carriage at different times of the day.  The other day they had uncle edies RV from Christmas Vacation.  I almost got that item.

I have watched Dept 56 over the years -- some years VERY closely, other years not so.  And I've never seen Dept 56 re-issue a retired building.  Back when I followed their offerings more closely than I do now, I recall the "collector mentality" was a very important part of the "brand" image.  Years ago, dealers couldn't even discount product much -- if at all -- off MSRP.  But I've seen that element relaxed more recently.

Years ago, when I was working at a Florist in Ohio we carried a large line of Dept.56.  The sales rep. for Dept.56 told us that once a building was re-tired the mold was destroyed so it could not be re-issued, which would cause the  building to be more collectable.  Some building were only made for a couple of years.

Back when the ESB was issued, I want to say 2001 or so, I purchased one at a discount from the local shop, and ended up taking it back because it was more like N or Z-scale and didn't fit in with our other Dept. 56 village items. Years later, I realized I could have used it for a forced-perspective background, and regretted that decision. I don't think they're worth the high prices on e-bay. Maybe someday I'll find one at a garage sale.

I have a buddy that has been looking for one at a bargain price for 10 years. He still does not  have it.

He doesn't really want it much, one has to conclude. Or perhaps he likes the thrill of racing against his demise.

In any case, generally speaking, it's not a great time of the year to be shopping for these buildings.
