I have a couple of Dept 56 Brite-lites on my Christmas layout that I would like to convert so that I can use transformer power instead of the included battery pack or the optional 120ac converter.  The input to these lights are 3vdc & 1250ma.  Is this doable?  If so, how difficult?  I'm not electronic smart, so I'll need  something specific, like part #s, etc.  The plan would be to tap into a power line supplying my building lights which are powered by my ZW.  The building lights are leds, which I run at about 14 volts.

I'd use an LM350, a 3A diode, and a large capacitor, say around 1000uf at 35 volts.  Also, you'll probably want a couple of .1uf caps for input and output transient protection.  You'll also need a couple of resistors to program the voltage of the LM350.

Here's a typical example and the computation of output voltage.  R1 is 240 ohms, and R2 is 330 ohms for 2.97 volts out, close enough.

Some time ago I saw some kind of D56 "central power supply" that you plugged in to the wall (or a power strip) and then you plugged in your buildings/lights/accessories to it.  It could handle several items and consumed way less power than the individual building to power strip approach.  It also handled things that you'd normally have to power from battery packs.  I haven't gotten out to do any shopping yet but I am going to be looking for these this year.  If you can find one, it might be just the ticket.

Bill,

This may be what you are looking for.

It appears to do the same thing that gunrunnerjohn's circuit does.  The GRS 130 accepts an input of 6-20 volts AC with an output of 2.85 volts DC.  List price ordering directly from GRS is $34.95  I have one that I use for Lemax RR Crossing lights that require 3.0 volts DC and have it attached to a Lionel 153 IR Controller using accessory power.

Just one more option to consider.
