How COULD they know? Since it is on tangent track, the headend crew can't see back that far, so until the train separates and the air brakes go into emergency, things just keep going along. Now, you saw what happened when the subject empty coal gondola hit that street crossing. If and when they come to a bridge or switch, things will probably get a LOT more interesting!

Look to me like they was just regrading the ballast...
I thought when the car hit the crossing that car was going to pop up and land right back on the track... then when the wheel set came out...
Amazing enough is the guy in the pick up did not get hit with debris... can you imagine if you were in a locomotive and saw the wheel set at the crossing grade? Talk about surprise.
You can sometimes fill the " tug " of a car or cars when something just isn't right.
First time I had cars split a switch due to the mine already have run thru it I didn't fill it,but saw the cars wiggling .And cars just don't wiggle when your on straight flat track.The cars were only about 10 deep from the head-end when I saw this.

The videographers however COULD and DID see this coming and to remain on that overpass as it came at them and under them was shear idiocy. If it had piled up and taken out the bridge they'd be whining and suing even though if they'd had any brains they could have gotten off the overpass.
This looks like the walkway between the State of Texas Polk Street Building and the parking lot accross the UP East Belt Sub. State employees have access to the walkway.
