No wiring diagrams but depending on what version of James it is (conventional, or Lion Chief) then we can probably help you figure out the wires.

On the conventional there is only 6 total.  Middle Rail roller, outside rail to the wheels, 2 going to a direction lock switch, and 2 wires to the motor.

On James there is also a couple of wires going back to the tender that runs the sound board and speaker there, but I recall they are tied to the roller & outside wires as well.

If its the Lion Chief there is multiple connectors but they are color coded and rather obvious where they go.

many get "hacked" for all day or constant display running, like at a museum. There is no need for any functions, except power to the motor in forward.

So, is there a DC motor or an AC motor? You may see diodes for voltage control or a bridge rectifier to convert to DC.

it may not be worth returning to original. Just replace running gear and motor, or service the motor if it's AC.

Edit: Sorry, I discovered James was 2006- 6-18734  I don't think that you'll get a schematic, but parts and board connectors are available. Use Sandman's description or check on Lionel's website - they came with the AC converted and used a DC motor.

Thanks everyone for assistance, heres some diagrams i can make based on when i opened it up.

this must be conventional because its just 6 wire from the board. The motor is dc.

red/blue for motor

brown/grey for power pickup

white/blue for the 2 on off switches?

from the frame:

red/black for the dc motor

blue/back w/brown stripe for pickup

2 red goes to the plug to the tender for the whistle? There is a whistle

white has a little light. This is for on off switch

oversized yellow for an on/off switch

but from the frame the colors are different, i tried the"match the color" and it brought back the direction option, no on/off switches work-with one wire, as if its stuck on,  whistle still does not work.

If the board still works then it looks like you just need to clean up the wiring job.  Use heat shrink tubing rather than rolled electrical tape like someone did on that one.

Your diagram looks right, just like Roving Sign above posted the nice wiring pic.

Test the motor with DC 5v or so, or for a quick second test you can even use a 9v battery.  If the motor doesn't move or is stiff:

DC MOTOR / W/GEAR / JAMES (THOMAS SERIES)

If the motor is good and it doesn't work then change out the circuit board:

6108733106

E-UNIT/PERCY-MIKADO Round Edge(6108733104-Sq Edge)

Whistle on these isn't very impressive either.  Just a little peep.  I've used a different speaker before on the output to test before ordering a speaker.  8ohm anything will work for a test.

The sound gets its power from the boiler part of the engine, but all the sound system is in the tender.  It uses the DC offset when the whistle button is pressed.

On the speaker in the tender they are very tiny and prone to go out:

6108728536SPEAKER / 16 ohm W/ ENCLOSURE / O GAUGE THOMAS

691CSNDAS1PCB / STEAM WHISTLE

Parts show in stock at Lionel.

use the wires from the chassis to connect to the e-unit according to the Thomas schematic from what they are connected to

here the James e-unit photo from Lionel - it looks like yours

James-E-Unit

Lionel used differing colors during production runs

Do you have a meter to check continuity? Find the color chassis wire connected those.

If there is no switch - connect those wires together - to turn ON the e-unit control.
