I just got my premiere Alco PA ABA PS2 set. It has a smoke unit in both A units. I noticed that the rear smoke unit wasn’t smoking (I could hear the fan and feel air coming out). So I decided to some investigation. I was thinking maybe the wick was bad so I’d got take a look. While taking the smoke unit inspection cover off, it arced towards the slave board that’s next to it.

now both units won’t do anything. When power is applied both with a dcs explorer and conventional all that happens is the side number boards light up. The dcs explorer sees the unit but nothing works when I press horn bell etc. the app lets me speed up and slow down and do everything like the loco was actually moving but in reality the loco is dead.  I get a slight buzzing and a part on the the main A unit board gets warm.  It’s the part that look like a spool of thread with a copper coil wrapped around it. The head of that spool is warm.

im assuming that arc fried the board. But how did that arc fry the main board?  It arced on the rear slave board

That’s exactly what I did😞. Lesson learned. Now are these parts potentially repairable?  Or is a board completely fried usually and need a pa3 upgrade?

btw can the ps3 upgrade control both a units like it is now? Or do you need a separate upgrade unit in each A?

You could contact someone like George, @GGG, to see if he could repair the board, but it's most likely toast.

The PS2 board can be replaced with a PS32 board, and the slave board can also be replaced with a new one if necessary. Both are available from MTH parts.
