Well, these things are designed for more the kids and meeting a certain price point, less so for the experienced adult model railroader.  Eliminating the handrails lowers the cost of material, assembly and at the retail level.

 

Plus, we wouldn't want the little tykes poking their eye out if a handrail became dislodged, would we?

The journal box covers on the front axle have very sharp points......did they fix that too?!?!?!?!?
