Hello,

I have been looking to acquire an MTH steam engine for some time now. I have been looking at the MTH NYC 30-1461-1 (http://mthtrains.com/content/30-1461-1) as well as MTH 30-1568-1 (http://mthtrains.com/content/30-1568-1). I was wondering what the primary differences are between these two engines. I'm aware that the latter is PS3.0, but aside from that, are there any major differences. Based on the pictures, the PS3.0 engine also appears to have a bolder/sharper black, but I was not sure if that is just the way it appears online. Is it worth waiting the extra months for the newer engine? Also, the current version on my dcs remote is 3.1, since I'm hesitant to upgrade the remote/TIU. Would that mean I would be unable to use a PS3.0 engine? Aprecciate any comments or feedback.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

First, all DCS hardware and software can operate all PS2 and PS3 engines. The caveats are that some features, such a quilling whistle, require newer software and taht DCS 3.1 was a somewhat buggy release.

Second, all DCS hardware can be used with all versions of DCS.

Third, in order to upgrade the sound files in PS3 engines, the latest DCS software, DCS 4.20 and teh latest Loader Program 2.30 are required.

Last, PS3 engines are superior to PS2 engines. They do not require a battery ad, when used with the latest Rev. L TIU, will yield significantly better DCS signal strength under adverse wiring and track topology conditions.

One thing that always strikes me is the presence/absence of a wired tether.  I happen not to like them but they might not bother you.  The PS2 has a wired tether and the PS3 does not.

One of my criteria would be price.  If you are talking the $30 difference in MSRP, it ought to be a no-brainer.  PS3 is the way to go.  However, if money is tight, you might find the PS2 version deeply discounted enough to make it worth buying over the PS3. Only you can decide that.

I'm with Barry though.  The PS3 is superior to the PS2.  I'd wait.

As for upgrading, have no fear.  I would absolutely upgrade DCS on your remote/tiu.  There are a lot of people who can help step you through it.  Some hobby shops will do it for you.  If you go to York, I am sure you will be able to find someone to do it.  As a last resort, there is probably someone on here that would do it for you if you send it to them and cover the postage both ways.
