What is different about a sound file for a Rail King version of a locomotive vs a sound file for the Premier version of the same locomotive? Will a Railking file work in a Premier version?

If it is a steam engine, the chuffs will be off. The scale version almost always has larger drivers. On diesels, it doesn't matter.
If the drivers are different sizes, the engine's speed will be off, as well.
Okay, got it. I assume diesels would be okay then as Chuck mentioned above, or electrics, anything with the same diameter drivers as the other. I'm thinking about my Proto upgrade projects, if the Premier line doesn't have it, but the Railking does, it might work for the Premier.
Be careful about diesels. I would not assume that all diesel sound files are interchangeable between Premier and Railking. Some of the six-axle models have different trucks, and presumably gearing depending on Premier or Railking. The Premier models after about 2006 typically have the 3/2 truck with all axles powered. Railking versions still have the older truck with only four powered wheels and idler wheels. I would not put a Premier Dash 8 sound set in the Railking Scale version. The same goes for other models that exist in both Premier and Railking Scale versions, like the SD60s and SD45s.

Good points to consider Rich; thank you.
The other difference is features such as MARS light, numberboards, Marker lights. Some have and some don't. Most of this is trial and error by testing the sound file.
I have been upgrading some F-3s. Early versions did not have MARS lights, later version did. Number board lighting using the Ditch light connector results in the ditch light flashing when the horn is blown. Even when set to ON with DCS. I need to test some other F-3 files since the common one that comes up doesn't seem to handle lighting correctly. G
