I was interested in buying on line the MTH Southern Crescent Imperial model as opposed to the more expensive Premium. I've seen a couple of you tubes showing of the Engine in both Premium and Imperial models....the whistles sound totally different from one another. The Premium sounds great....the Imperial...not so much....what's the scoop? Anyone know out there?

With the latest MTH Premier version of the Crescent Limited with Protosounds 3, it has quillable whistle feature which has not been a feature on RailKing Engines. However, quillable whistle on the latest version really is 2 whistles rather than being quillable as demonstrated in the below video. MTH is coming out with Crescent Limited in RailKing with Protosounds 3 which is in the latest catalog. It is possible that the whistle could be different on that engine, but we will have to wait to find out.

Do you think the Imperial might come with a quillable whistle? I don't believe I've seen any with it. Keep forgetting that the Imperial versions I've seen on line are Proto 2. Hopefully the proto 3 version will be a little more realistic.

I have not heard anything from MTH about them offering the quillable whistle on the Imperial line. I assume they will keep it only on Premier line for marketing purposes. I have the Premier Protosounds 2 Crescent Limited and the whistle on it is different than Protosounds 3 engine. Because of the new technology with Protosounds 3, the sound file has to be recreated; therefore, the new Imperial Engine may have different whistle sound from Protosounds 2 sound file.
I have the Lionel Legacy version. Nice whistle.
