Scenario: Used PS3 engine purchase arrives and prior owner used address #33. I already have an engine using #33 in my system. With the TIU disconnected from all other engines and connected to a dedicated test track..does eng found use the #33 or default to my always open #1. I have done this several times but in all the excitement....

I'm not sure of exactly what you are asking. You could run the engine using the slot 33 as is.
If you add the new (used) engine, the remote will change it's address to the first open slot. (Unless it happens to be the exact same engine name.)
The rules are that when DCS adds a DCS engine to a DCS Remote, it proceeds as follows:
- If the engine has never before been added to a DCS Remote or has been Factory Reset subsequent to the last time it was so added, it's added to the lowest DCS ID# in the DCS Remote that's unused.
- If the engine had been previously added to a DCS Remote and was not since then Factory Reset, it will be added to whatever DCS ID# it was last added to, if that DCS ID# is available in the DCS Remote. If that DCS ID# is not available, the engine is added to the lowest DCS ID# in the DCS Remote that's unused.
- If the engine has been previously added to a DCS Remote but was subsequently Factory Reset, it will be added to the lowest DCS ID# that's unused.

That explains why it rolls into my open #1 as #2 and up pretty much occupied. After it loads in #1, i always edit to another permanent address. Gotta say DCS pretty cool stuff
I believe that when the remote is changing the address of an engine, it may at first assign it to #1? I've had some engines with battery issues get lost. When I searched the boards for stored addresses, I found that they had address of #1.
That is just a guess on my part. I found it odd as the engine had a higher number in it originally, and it would be re-assigned to a higher number. That address did not stick because of a dead battery when the power was cycled. That's when I found it had an address of #1 slot.
I've always wondered if that was true or just an accident? Barry?
Joe,

How did you determine that the DCS ID# was actually "1"? If you looked into the engine itself (e.g., via the DCS Loader Program), you should be aware that if an engine has address "1", as opposed to having a "1" in its DCS Remote entry, that is the original, factory state of the engine.
A DCS engine always has an internal ID# that is one greater than the number it shows in a DCS Remote.
This is discussed ion The DCS Companion 3rd Edition (and 2nd Edition, as well) in Appendix E: The Truth About DCS Engine ID Numbers.
