I am using an O gauge PS3 loco electronics to put into my 1:32 Genesis loco and I am having trouble with the ditch light circuit. I have control in the remote soft keys to turn on and got to auto for the ditch lights. The diagram says that pin 39 and pin 5 are for the ditch lights, that is where I am lost. I need help with the wiring from there on. What type of leds to use, it had the surface mount, flat leds, but mine have to be the small round ones. How are the bulbs wired into the board? If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

Standard 20ma white LED's will work, they can be SMT or most any size.
The ditch lights anodes are indeed connected to pins 5 and pins 39, the cathodes are connected to either pin 38 or pin 40, that's DC ground.
Here's the wiring diagram for the wiring.

I thank you very much. I am working with the same diagram, so that is good. I have installed them as you said, but still no lights. This O gauge was originally a PS3 SD 70 and I have installed an Amtrak Genesis sound file and chain files. When pushing the soft key, I have a choice of auto, in auto should work with the horn, I think, or off. Still no lights. My other lights work, interior, headlight, number board, and in reverse, tail lights. It doesn't seem like I am getting any voltage from pin 39 or 5. How many volts should I get? I tried the voltage on the headlight pins and I got about .4 volts, unless I had the decimal point in the wrong place. Thanks again.
I know that when I measured voltage on a PS/3 board, I didn't get what I expected. The outputs are current limited, try putting something like a 270 ohm resistor across the output instead of the LED and see what voltage you measure. Try AC and DC.
Thank you, I will try that. Is there a capacitor involved with this circuit, or is this a matter of just switching on and off each light in sequence? Also, this might be a setup problem? I don't know. I have installed both the sound file and the chain files for the Genesis. MTH sent me this file, as the other Genesis locos didn't state in the features section, that operating ditch lights were included. I know that the new Genesis locos that haven't been sent yet, do say, in the features list that they do have operating ditch lights. Thanks again, Bob.
I was told also that the ditch lights don't work unless the loco is moving forward. I am using NWSL trucks, so the timing circuit is not set up, but I just remembered that I have an F3 truck somewhere, hopefully with a timing wheel on it. So I will try that. Bob.
SUCCESS! Hooked up a motor with the timing wheel. Throttled forward and no ditch lights until I turned on the headlights and then flashing ditch lights. Now I can sleep. Thanks everyone for your input and certainly led to my success. Bob.
Bob,
I was told also that the ditch lights don't work unless the loco is moving forward.
That's almost correct.
Unlike their PS2 cousins, PS3 ditch lights are only operational when the locomotive is moving in the direction of the ditch lights. My understanding is that this is more prototypical. Note also that PS3, unlike PS2, supports fully operational ditch rights on both ends of the engine.
Conversely, the cab light on PS3 locomotives is only lighted when the engine is standing still.
So, when you say cab lights, you mean interior lights? I am going stop while I am ahead, I am not going to worry about reverse ditch lights, I am satisfied with the ditch lights going forward, Thanks again. Bob
Yep, the interior lights with PS/3 or Lionel Legacy typically light only when the engine is stopped.
Thanks John for all of your help. Obviously I don't know all that I am supposed to know about DCS, but I am learning. Bob
I don't think anyone here knows all they could know about DCS, we're all learning.
