Thank you everyone for any guidance.

I think I'm confused about the difference between DCS and ProtoSound.

One of the things I like about DCS is the ability to run in scale MPH.

When I'm looking at locomotives at MTH web site, I look at the description for the words "with the digital command system"

I've been under the impression that this means the loco communicates with the DCS system, reports miles run, hours run, all that.

Some do not state this, for example the loco from 30-4142-1, it says passenger station proto effects.

So basically, do all 21st century loco's have these features (I mean except those that state they are conventional only)?

Thanks again

All PS2 and PS3 MTH engines will operate in command mode under DCS.

All other MTH engines (PS1, Locosound, "bell or whistle", etc.) are conventional engines and will not respond to DCS commands.

This and a whole lot more is all in "The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", now available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book from MTH's web store site! Click on the link below to go to MTH's web page for the book!

Lazy Railer,

The DCS is the control system that interfaces & controls P2 & P3 engines with it's hand held remote control, what most people fail to mention is that the DCS with the Z4K transformer, and the side receiver, can also control all Conventional Trains as well, via the DCS hand held remote control.  Even controlling both conventional and P2/P3 trains on the same track.  MTH does build P2/P3 engines & Conventional engines also.  The DCS can also run Lionel TMCC & Legacy to a point.  All this is spelled out in Barry's great DCS O Gauge Companion, 2nd addition.  OGR has a great DCS Video Guide explaining a lot of this information also.  Invest in both the book and the video for ultimate DCS education.   There is a lot to learn about our modern train hobby, if you like to correctly construct and run modern layouts.

PCRR/Dave
