Just purchased two brand new mth ps3 bnsf dash 9's. both are DOA out of the box. both say no engine to add when trying to add them to the dcs remote. I got these from trainworld. should I send them back to trainworld or send them to a authorized tech?

I am kinda bummed. these are sweet looking engines though. just need the same two engines fully fuctioning. thank goodness for the warranty. just my luck though.these are my first brand new mth engines in a while that did not work right out of the box.

You mean you have purchased brand new engines in the past that also have not worked out of the box?  That's poor luck.

What Dave said above.  There is a switch for DCS and DCC also.  Make sure it's on DCS.

Does it run in conventional mode or is it completely dead?  You could try a conventional reset.

If they are dead, I'd send them back to TW and would not mess around with warranty and repair.

Ron, what I ment was these are the first mth engines I have bought new that were DOA right out of the box. I haven't bought brand new engines in a while. Yes I have poor luck sometimes. Plan on ordering a few more so hopefully this is does not happ

Yes they are hi rail and yes I did check to make sure they were set to dcs per the switch. Guess a return to trainworld it is. Not the end of the world here. Just a bummer waiting to get replacements back from them. Also shipping back to them is pretty straightforward, they also will it appears pay for the shipping with a prepaid shipping label. Just have to bubble wrap the really good to avoid shipping damage.

Due to them being in NY and this crazy covid-19. It may just take a little longer to get them back as I am sure they are not up to full staff at trainworld yet. I should have asked Kenny if they could have tested them before shipping. Some online shops due. Never had any issues with trainworld though. I buy most of my new stuff their. Their sales and prices are hard to beat. Plus they have what I want.

Bad luck with two bad engines. One thing to keep in mind is these have battery eliminators and should be placed on the track with power at full for about a minute before trying to address them the first time. Even after they do get recognized you should allow at least twenty seconds every time you place them on the track for the super caps to charge up.

You likely won't find a tech that will do warranty work for items not purchased through the shop they work through.  The reason is MTH only supplies the parts for warranty work, so you're asking the tech to work for free as MTH doesn't pay labor on warranty repairs.

Thanks guys, just to make it clear I am using full dcs and I added the engines on my separate programming track. RJR I on a wim decided you may be right so I unboxed them again and tried each one. Still the same result after waiting  10min or so for each to charge up. Just to be clear I was adding them one at a time. Meaning only one on the track at a time. One engine did however power up with sound full blast and no movement, but still remote would not load it. My remote batteries are new and fresh btw. Guess they are going back. Not trainworld fault as they would not have known. Just got two lemons. Thanks for all your replies. Now it return and wait time. No new engines for me to run this weekend bummer😥

Roger, Trainworld is, I understand shut down for awhile, so there could be delay.  Might I suggest that before return shipping, you contact GGG and ask if he has any ideas.  He is also an MTH authorized repair service, and is VERY knowledgeable on the innards of DCS systems.

10 minutes is more than enough.  I usually just power up a track & press start.  Only becomes a problem if the power gets shut off (as with a derailment short) within the first minute or so.

rjr, thanks before contacting ggg I will try to call trainworld and see what how they are doing and if because of the virus they can handle my situation. they may not be fully staffed, but my order was prossed and shipped in 4 days regular shipping so that was very fast given their situation not to mention location during this crazy time. it will get resolved and I can look back on these engines in the future and have a good story for them.
