With Lionel, you have to read the description labels on the box or research the items in the catalogs or on the web site.  Shop employees should be able to help in this regard as well.  I think the labels on more recent production Standard O state that the item is Standard O in the item description label, but this has not always been the case.  I wish Lionel had a better way of marking the boxes and making the Standard O items easier to find.

I learnt from the owner of Electric Train Outlet in St. Louis, MO that scale sized Lionel freight cars, released or rereleased in the last few years, individually packed, have the item number beginning with 6-17### or 6-27###. This may also apply to 2-car or 3-car sets, but not always.

I am into 2-rail trains & I buy scale-sized Lionel freight cars to convert to 2-rail. I am not familiar with their item numbering scheme for locomotives or for passenger cars. I usually learn more about the prototype cars that I am interested in & this helps guide my determination of scale-sized equipment.

These are just my opinion,

Thanks,
