Hello.  I have a Weaver S-3 261 and I'm wondering if anyone knows if it has any type of cruise as I don't have the manual to reference?  Also, it has 2 chuffs per revolution and I'd like to change it to 4.  Has anyone done this and if so, how did you do it.   No, I'm not switching to a Lionel version so save your breath.  I know that comment will come.

Thanks

No it does not have cruise. Also, I may be wrong on this but I believe your stuck with the two chuffs per revolution. About the best you could do at the present would be to install an ERR of MTH upgrade kit, PS2 if you can find one or wait for PS3 to be released.  I have a Weaver #265 I did an upgrade to EOB a numbers of years ago. It's been a smooth runner ever sense.

Thanks for the response.   I have been looking at it and may upgrade with ERR cruise as I have a kit ready to go.  I swapped out all the wheels with plated wheels to look good sitting with all my 3rd Rail models, which is also the reason for the ERR kit versus PS as I'm trying to keep them all 1 system.  I'm not liking the 2 chuffs so I will be digging into that as well.

The electronics aren't the modular type as I was hoping because I was thinking the same thing about the Cruise Commander M.  I guess I'll be doing the full upgrade like Paul must have.  I saw that someone created 4 chuffs by adding lobes to the cam for the switch using JB Weld.   I am in the process of trying that as well.

D500, I don't like the shine either and do paint them, but the grey cast wheels actually look worse in my opinion.  All personal preference of course.

The electronics in that engine are probably the TAS "SAW Board." SAW stands for Sunset, Atlas, Weaver because TAS was supplying those boards to the Lionel licensees. I don't know about the Cruise Commanders kits, never installed one, but I seem to remember that TAS made an EOB drop-in kit that would work with the SAW board. Of course, those kits aren't exactly easy to find these days. I have a couple laying around somewhere; if I can find them I will check the instructions to see if they would work with the system on the S-3. Or, you could check with Weaver - Gary did a lot of TAS upgrades on Weaver brass engines before the TAS boards became unavailable.

The S3 was one of a very few Weaver engines to have the TAS puff and chuff synchronized smoke system. I can't remember if mine has two or four chuffs per rev; it's been over a year since I ran it.

Yes, it does have a SAW board.  I wish I would have seen this before I starting tearing it apart tonight as I like the thought of an EOB drop in option.

I actually have 4 chuffs now after adding 2 more lobes and I have the ERR cruise installed.  Tomorrow I'll finish up with the RS board and put Humpty back together again.  I just need to validate some wiring so I can use the existing switch versus the ERR supplied reed switch so I can have truly synchronized sound off the driver.

Note that the SAW board uses the Lionel standard RS4 sound cards and the R2LC as well.  If you find a steam TMCC motherboard that will fit into the unit, you can then equip it with the Cruise Commander M, and other than the $20 or so for the TMCC motherboard, it'll be the same as doing it with the modular electronics.  There will be a bit more work making the conversion.  What I do is look through the Lionel documentation for the schematic of a likely similar locomotive with modular electronics and use that as a guide to installing the electronics package.
