A bicycle light?
Here's my thought. Gilbert made a whole bunch of scientific toys, including microscopes. I think that may have been a device that attached to the microscope to backlight some of the slides for better viewing. I had something similar in the late 50's.

Exactly what I was thinking, but just a guess
Thanks everyone. The microscope back light for slides sounds good. I’ll go with that until otherwise advised.
