I have an MTH (Lionel Corporation) O gauge No. 249E Christmas passenger set.  There is some problem with the tether, I think.  I had to send the locomotive and tender back to the original hobby shop twice to get it repaired a few years ago when it was new.  It came back working after the second repair but with a huge tie-wrap around the cable leading to the tether bar in the locomotive.  The set was packed away for a couple years.  I decided to put it under the tree this year.  Here it is actually working fine a hour ago.  This unit has "special" Christmas announcements instead of yard chatter.  Have to admit, the Christmas announcements are a little weird.  I videoed the last run before the problem.  At the end of the attached video, I shut down the locomotive with the SU/SD button on the remote.  THEN... THEN, the tether? problem reoccurred.  Symptoms are: 1) Locomotive still responds to speed and direction controls, 2) Locomotive headlight is off, 3) There are no chuff or other sounds from the tender.

I've got to conclude that this is fundamental design issue with he 249E.  I'm assuming the tether comes loose in the locomotive somehow.  I'm not brave enough to dismantle the locomotive to try to find a fix.  I'd be happy to replace the funky bar tether connection with a wired version if that would solve the problem.  Can Henning's undertake such a repair?  I hope so.

Thanks for your time.

I would track down GunRunner John who has in his signature that he is a Henning's MTH technician.

Having said that, Hennings is a great store and they worked on my most recently purchased prewar switcher. What an honest, hardworking bunch of folks. No wonder why they are in business so long!

MNCW, Thanks.  I've looked at the loco and there already is a large (1/4") tie-wrap anchoring the tether to the loco chassis.  It came back that way after sending a second time for repair.  Apparently, that didn't work OR there is some other problem.  I'm an EE by training but disassembling locomotives is as scary to me as going to the dentist.  I'd rather trust someone to do it.

I know GRJ but had never really thought of him as a MTH technician.  He's upgraded several Lionel items for me in the past.  He would be ideal but John has his hands full right now with a big house move.  I'll probably just take the loco/tender up to Henning's after Christmas and let them have at it.  If it has to wait for John to be free, so be it.  For now, it will just run silently under the tree.  It's a shame, we really love this little train, and it would be fun for the grandkids, but it has never really run for more than an hour.  :-(

I concur with your thoughts on Hennings' and the folks there.  One of the true LHS still around in the Philadelphia area.

Repair Technician, Sorry, but I don't know who GGG is.

Thanks much for your responses, MNCW and Repair Technician.  Have a very Merry Christmas.

Thanks for the information and the kind offer to help, Alan.  It looks like GGG is in Virginia; a bit far for me to drive.  Henning's is about an hour from my home (used to be about 10 minutes but we moved), so they are pretty convenient.  We are living near Valley Forge, Pa.  Where are you located in NJ?  We have a summer place in OCNJ.

Thanks, Repair Technician and Tinplate Art.  I'm going to give Henning's a try after the holidays.  Pretty sure GRJ won't be able to work on it so hoping they have another tech who can take it on.   RT, thank you, again, for the offer of help.  If Henning's doesn't work out, I may be giving you a call.

All the best, Guys.  Merry Christmas!!!
