In my humble opinion it's the Lionel JLC Norfolk & Western Y6b 2-8-8-2 #2200.  TMCC and late RS4, it is a magnificent model with a piercing, unforgettable hooter whistle that's never been replicated.  The Y6b pictured here parked at Roanoke and awaiting its crew call recently ran on Eliot Scher's railroad.  There are two more just like it in the DUTRY roundhouse on Duck Island.

The last photo is a rare K-Line car that George Lasley and I are "improving" (and it was pretty good to begin with).  The heavy well flat with four trucks carries a ship's propeller (properly called a wheel) en route to Norfolk for installation on a Duckunder Marine coastal coal vessel.  The model is diecast and very heavy.  So far we've added a wood deck and painted the fixture holding the wheel blue to distinguish it from the car.  More changes coming.

Happy holidays to all!

I am sure the VL Big Boy will be awesome. I have the VL Clinchfield Challenger with the stereo speakers, and it's very realistic and impressive. If the Big Boy matches that, it'll be a winner. But the dual fatboy speakers in the Y6b coupled to that spectacular hooter whistle produces a unique sound and sheer volume, including an eerie echo, that will be hard to beat!

Lionel JLC Norfolk & Western Y6b 2-8-8-2 #2200!!  Will, thank you for sharing the photos.  I saw one operate on a friend's layout, and I can't argue with your opinion.  It is a beauty!!

I have seen this before, but don't know what JLC stands for.  Someone, please enlighten me!  Thank you!

I have the MTH N&W Y6b with PS2.  I bought it from a Forum member.  I would love to have one of these Lionels, but for one the budget couldn't stand it.  Also, while the MTH is compressed and made to run on tighter curves, I like it because I will never have a space larger than 12' x 12' to run it, and I don't want to make the room just one big circle.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one. I have it on order!

Ha, Ha!  Thank you Will and Forrest.  Yes, I know the famous name Joshua Lionel Cowen! Never occurred to me that was what JLC stood for. A Lionel Joshua Lionel Cowen engine!  I take it that this is some commemorative thing.  Tell me I'm wrong again!

I was looking for a smiley guy with a dunce cap.  This will have to do.

Sorry to spoil the fun, Forrest!

Didn't this locomotive hit the stores in 2000? Yet its detailing, operation, and sounds have never been put together in a better package. It's truly a Lionel classic. I look forward to the new Legacy version with the hope that its sounds and operation will take us to a new level.

Mark,

Dunce? Never! It's tough to keep up with the myriad of details like this in the hobby, as in this case where Lionel abandoned the highly-detailed JLC line in favor of Vision Line products.  I don't worry about what I don't know about O-gauge 3-rail. I'd go nuts if I did.

Paul,

It is chain with hooks on each end and a coil spring "spliced" in line to keep it taught.

Had a K-Line car.

He's right about the coil spring.  While it's fairly subtle and small, it doesn't look quite realistic and is one of the changes we will be making to the car's rigging and overall look.

The road name will change, too, to Duckunder Marine!

Here's what the spring looks like up close:

Thank you Will!  I see, the Vision Line is now the cat's meow.  Or should I say lion's roar! truth be told I try not to pay much attention to the high end offerings, because they are way out of my price range.  I just enjoy photos, videos, and in person visits put on by all the generous folks who love to share these fantastic models with others.

Thank you One and all!
