I recently bought a PRR K4s 20-3125-1 cab# 1737 with3 volt Proto 2 from 2004. I went to install a BCR 2 and seen it has 2 AA nicad batteries and not the usual double battery pack. Was this a transition unit? I never seen one before and I guess won't get a BCR installed lol.

The BCR would be wired in the same way, no reason you can't use a BCR. The worst case would be you'll have to add the matching connector.
Yes, Early units had it in 1 Scale and O. It is pretty convenient from my perspective, because of the popularity of AA rechargeable batteries. G
First time I seen one like that, I'll probably leave it as is but I will pick up a pair of NiMH batteries to replace the Nicads tonight.
I guess I could desolder the wires from the battery and cut the connector off the BCR2 and solder the wires together?
You could also just splice a mating connector onto the engine harness to connect the BCR.
Where do I get one?
I get them from my pile of old wiring, if you don't have any, your method may make more sense. I always try to keep the wiring so I can unplug stuff if I can.
Take the cheap way out and buy a pair of nimh pencells
I installed a BCR2 tonight and it's working fine.
