I have a Lionel Atlantic #103 engine that after running for ten to fifteen minutes begins to go slower, increasing the transformer voltage does not increase the speed. The engine gets very hot as well.

I am using a KW transformer, have cleaned the track and checked the voltage to the track also and it is ok, not the transformer losing power.

This engine is a favorite with the grandchildern and smokes really well.

The motor has just been replaced.

What could the problem be?

The symptoms suggest either the motor or some binding in the gears.  Do the wheels turn freely with little friction when you turn them by hand?  If there's too much friction, it will overheat.  Did you lube the gears and axles?  I've seen several of these with bad motors lately, those motors don't take much abuse.

Your motors is D.C. I have a feeling its your motor. The part number is 6008008105 from Lionel's website. The good part is that they're only $8.00. Those are small motors that was put into your engine. Constant running will shorten its life. It was made to be used as a starter set. If your going to run it for long periods I would suggest getting more than one that way you'll have a spare and with lionel at times discontinuing part supplies is something I consider.

Thanks CW,

I should have read the complete post. Binding in the linkage or smoke unit could be his problem or receiving a bad motor. The original motor could have caused problems with the E unit. I would run the engine in reverse and see if it still gets hot. If it stays normal, the I would  say that the units forward side is bad. If it get as hot in reverse, I would look for any binding of the linkage, smoke puffer or receiving a bad motor. You can also check and see if there is any crude in the gears. If you need a new motor or e- unit, we sell Lionel parts at 15% off list price.
