Hi all, I have an issue with the headlight and backup light output on an ERR cruise commander install.

I have no voltage from ether of those outputs.

I have set the feature code to 4.

The loco runs fine in forward and reverse. Smoke unit works and railsounds system operates correctly.

Any ideas on what to check?

Thanks

Nick

If you are running command and using LED's the polarity will be reversed.  Not sure why ERR does not make this more clear in their instructions, however I suspect this is your problem.  Also ensure you have not hit the aux 2 command by mistake.  It also turns off the lights.  Good luck!

Thanks guys,

Full fat Cruise Commander and conventional lamps. Originally I did think they were LEDS (they are hidden in the bodywork) but I checked out the polarity and used a transformer feed and they operate with polarity in ether direction. So they are conventional bulbs. I tried the aux 2 command and no dice.

I suspect the R2LC as everything else appears to check out.

I checked another loco I have that I installed the same set up and I get around 9V on the headlight power feed. That's 1/2 wave if I remember correctly in TMCC mode.

I know you're running steam, however try setting the feature code to 6 and see if the lights work.  If so, reset again to 4 in hopes the R2LC will respond correctly.  Does the horn sound when you set the feature code.  If not the R2LC may well be defective.  Also check the R2LC version.  It should be 01 or above I believe.  Good luck!

Hi Bruce, Smoke unit ground is connected to the frame.

I swapped in another R2LC from another Cruise Commander conversion I have and the lights work correctly. 👍

I will try your suggestion on resetting the feature code to 6. The whistle did blow when I set the code on the original R2LC last night.

If that doesn’t work I guess it’s a faulty R2LC.

Nick, you didn't say if this is a steam or diesel engine. Feature code 4 is correct for a steam engine, feature code 8 is correct for a diesel with smoke. The only difference with regard to the lights is if you use code 4 the headlight stays on even in reverse. If you use 8 the headlight is off when the back up light is on.

Did you try hitting the Aux2 button before swapping R2LCs. That setting is stored even when turning off power so if it had been pressed at some time the head and tail lights would have been turned off.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

It’s a steam engine. It’s my first upgrade from scratch on a steamer so I have been really careful with the tether.

It’s a Darstaed A4 Mallard for the little lads Christmas present. So I have put in Guns’s Super Chuffer and a Lionel smoke unit. It’s a tight fit!

Bruce’s idea worked I swapped the R2LC into my other cruise commander equipped engine (a GG1) and reset the feature code to 6 and it works fine.

Got the A4 running and all features operating correctly! Loving the super chuffer John👍😎.  I post a vid when I get the chance. Nearly got caught by Mason just now when I was testing the engine. Hidden away now.

That was a close one!

Thanks for all the help guys.

Nick
