I'm thinking about upgrading two engines I have.  The list of specifics are as follows:

Engine 1- Lionel CSX GP30, 6-28557, TMCC Odyssey, 2005-06 catalogs

Engine 2- Lionel Chessie GP30, 6-28855, TMCC Odyssey, 2006-06 catalog

Control system is CAB1.

I really like the detail and the sound, and both run great.  The Chesssie does occassionally have a mind of its own though.  The problem is when I try to "lash-up".  I thought since they came out of the same catalog, they should work togethor OK.  But after several attempts, I've had little luck.  Taking a closer look, they are built differently.  The big difference is the gears, where one has two drive wheels on each truck and the other has 4 drive wheels with completely different gear configuration.  I only have invested $170 total in these engines and thought the cost of upgrading the Odyssey to cruise M, could solve my lash-up problem and might not be a waste of money.

I have the following questions:

Would upgrading both engines to ERR cruise M realisticly correct my "lash-up" problem?

Is cruise M the best sollution for this issue?

Does the fact that I only have CAB1 be and issue if I upgrade?

Is this a DIY job for someone that is pretty handy, but limited electrical work (my other hobby is furniture making)?

Would These engines a good candidate for an upgrade?

Any and all comments welcome.

Thank you.

John

The CC-M does have a "nudge" feature to synchronize speeds for a lash-up, so it should work.  Did you try disabling the cruise on both of them and seeing if they run better together?  The CC-M is about the only solution, and the CAB1 is no problem.  As far as a DIY job, that really does depend on your skill level.  There is some wiring involved, but it's not complicated.  I suggest downloading the CC-M documentation from ERR and looking it over.

I think for the nudge feature to be effective the engines have run relatively close together in the first place. The nudge is for fine tuning. I would first run both on the same track a few inches apart with Odyssey on. Then run them at the same speed either by watching the Command Base for an equal number of red light blinks or the same number on the Legacy handheld. Or change the addresses to the same number. Then observe how close they run together. A large difference is probably due to gear ratios. If the gearing is not close, a Cruise M will likely not make them run together without overheating them.

Thank you for the responses.  I did a great deal of testing by positioning them about 3" apart. I tried multiple combination of Odyssey on and off between them.   I could occasionally get them to run the same speed.  But, often the Chessie would jump at start.  Based on comments so far,  I think I'll do some more testing and if it looks to be an issue with the Chessie, upgrade that one and see the results.

Regarding my electronics experience,  besides the occasional lose wire repair, I forgot to post that I have built a few floor and shelf speaker sets from scratch.

my hopes is to combine these two engines with my CSX dummy and make my "go to" diesel set in my small collection.
