I recently picked up at an estate sale 4 ETS sets, complete except for the transformer. The set came with Lionel 3 rail O-27 track. The question I have is will a standard ZW or other compatible work with these sets, or do I need a HO transformer to run them. I'll admit I got them on the extremely cheap. one is a passenger set, beer car set, mixed freight and the last mixed passenger with freight.

IIRC, some ETS is 3-rail DC.
And if I ever get around to setting mine up, I'll know for sure...
They make both DC and AC models, depending on the target market. Best bet would be to contact them and ask for sure what you have.

I contacted ETS earlier this week with a similar question and both 3 rail AC and 3 rail DC ETS trains work with Lionel or MTH transformers. The only issues you run into is if the engine is DC and has sounds the whistle/horn will randomly activate.
