Hokay folks, who here is holding out for the New Lionel....Exploding Tank Car.  Yup , same tried and true "mouse trap" mechanism you know and love.  Add a little excitement to your railroad....couple up just a little too hard ...and  KA- BOOM !!!!   Comes with internal pockets which hold flour, so you can simulate a huge, highly toxic explosion !    First responders and lawyers not included !

I don't believe toxic explosions of a tank car, real or model, is something anywhere near entertaining.  Toxic chemical spills and explosions kill and hurt people.  Not a very wise accessory for model trains.

I believe Lionel released some sort of tank car accessory which had to do with a chemical spill.  I did not think this item was a good idea either.

Pass for me as well.

As to that other tank car accident accessory, I always found it strange that it included a welder!  I know that is a thing that Lionel is trying to incorporate in a few different cars/accessories to get some bang for their development buck, but considering much of what gets transported in tank cars can have interesting reactions with flames, I thought a welder was quite an odd choice.

Amen Art, amen indeed.

Lets all lighten here. Remember almost all of us got into this hobby after playing with toy trains that ran on 3 rails. Have we forgot about exploding box cars? How about those flat cars with the atomic waste loads that glow in the dark? I bet those rocket fuel tank cars would make a nasty mess if they tipped over.  And last but never the less just as dangerous, we can never forget about those mobile missile flat cars and engins that launched deadly plastic missiles tipped with 100 mega ton warheads. Those mibile missile launchers taught us how to play "The Cold War" and WWIII.

And that guy welding a tank car-come on guys, that tank car had a load of corn syrup and he was trying to save the load.

Jaygee,

Considering the recent deadly accidents involving railroad tank cars, I do not share your sense of humour on this matter. You should also consider the negative effect these types of accidents have on one of the few growing sectors of the rail transport industry. I try not to offer too many opinions on this forum as it is for all of our enjoyment, but I am pretty sure none of the first responders who read your post will find it funny either.

This is not an attempt at political correctness but a call for some sense of Human compassion and class.

Well maybe not exploding, but how about some sound when the

car is coupled to rough.

"Hey fred, After that last couple I think we blew a line on #4 "

Maybe something simular to the tank cars with all the sound they made a couple

years a go.

I believe that there was a legacy cattle car that had a cowboy and

cow sounds that became louder as the ride became rougher.

There might be some play value there...

I think disasters are a normal part of pretend play. A lot of times kids use them as either a transition or ending to what they're doing. After commenting on any elaborate town with trains, an airport, etch that my two kids created in the living room, I had to sadly announce that they needed to dismantle it and put it away. Next thing you know, a plane crashed into a bus that was crossing the tracks. The train piled into the accident triggering a major landslide and earthquake destroying the town. Then a flash flood swept it all into the toy box. I can't think of a more exciting way to put away your toys.

The controversy alone will have these puppies flying off the shelves!  And into the fray, comes Lionel with the ultimate Gomez Addams wanna-be!  Yup, she's the big Lionel ....Exploding Steam Locomotive!   Here she comes; the big C&O Allegheny in full 1/4 inch scale!  She's the rehashed JLC H8 2-6-6-6; Number 1642.  Put her on your favorite coal train and send her off to Hinton.  And the track activator you previously set up at CW tower sets the action into motion.  The low water alarm starts to screech, water overflow drains from the injector and FWH system under the cab, and a few moments later....BOOM, the crown sheet lets go and fills the air in your basement with a gallon of pre-heated smoke fluid!  A super powered spring mechanism blows the boiler of the chooch zillions of scale feet into the air and it comes crashing down...all thirteen pounds of it ...onto your right of way!  Thus ensuring the track workers plenty of overtime for the next week!   Big fun!  And big bucks too. Only $2195. at your favorite LHS/ Lionel dealer.   For those of us challenged with smaller layouts, or tighter radii, Big "L" has...the Exploding B&O Dockside!  And for the kids, and young at heart...The Exploding Thomas the Tank Engine!   Bon appetit!, or perhaps,  mysterious and spooky !

I seem to remember some PC type folks in the 80's getting upset about this one:

Big difference....neither of these cars explode and spread flour all over your tracks....how about an exploding water water tank or depot; short out the tracks and brings your train to a halt?....just a bad idea

As to the idea an exploding tank car involving a powdery substance that will make a mess on my layout, I'll pass.

I'm with you.  It's all about fun and breaking the rules that constrain us in the real world is fun!  Political incorrectness - yes!!.  I have a murder (with smoking gun), a theft, a wife-beating/husband being arrested, and a purse snatching on my layout, and in addition an Eskimo porno shop (Polar XXX Press).

As to the mess of exploding flour - every time I add vegetation with a shaker bottle of "grass" I make a much, much bigger mess.  That's what shop vacs are for!

I think the original poster's intentions was purely tongue-in-cheek.

No such product has been announced by Lionel, formally or otherwise.  I certainly haven't seen anything on their website, from mail listings, etc. to indicate that they are.  If anyone has credible evidence to the contrary then by all means post it here.  Otherwise you can just conclude that the original poster probably did indeed watch the "Big Train video once too often[sic] with an overly active, if not downright hyper, imagination at play.
