Hi!
Just curious. Does anyone know why some C Liners have a rear 3 aXperia configuration and some have only a 2 wheel configuration?
Thanks!

FM offered the C-Liner for passenger service with a three axle truck in the rear. Two axles were powered with the center axle un-powered. The extra axle was for added support for the steam generator equipment that was located in the rear of the loco.

Except TM Terry accurately answered the question already. Also, the term C-Liner is a shorthand description for a class of Fairbanks-Morse locomotives, which also came in varied horsepower ratings in addition to the five-axle option.
There were the:
CFA-16-4, a 1600-hp 4-axle freight A unit;
CFB-16-4, same except as a cabless B unit;
CFA-20-4, same, except 2000 hp;
CFB-20-4
CPA-20-5, a 2000-hp 5-axle passenger A unit;
CPA-24-5, same, except 2400 hp.
The Canadian Locomotive Company, F-M’s Canadian licensee, also made 5-axle 1600-hp A and B passenger units (CPA-16-5 and CPB-16-5) and 4-axle 1600-hp passenger units (CPA-16-4).

Thanks for the informative reply Jim. I'm working on collecting a C Liner with any and all road names that I can. The most elusive was the exclusive run of LIRR Tichy Scheme C Liners made for The Nassau Hobby Center. 2 Forum members came to the rescue as I'm purchasing from them. Anyway, I thought the rear 3rd axle versions were unusual so I was curious about why some C Liners had them and some didn't.
