Beginning in the late 80s, a fleet of French built stainless steel tank cars or “wagons” as they are known in Great Britain, entered service on the UK network. The principal commodity to be carried by these wagons was china clay slurry. With their shiny reflective finish, they were very reminiscent of the plated tank car models sold by Lionel during the Fundimensions era. In fact, these wagons quickly earned the moniker “silver bullets.”  After many years of hard service, the finish has weathered and they no longer possess the beauty they first had when delivered but still serve well in their assigned service.

Below are several pictures taken of the “silver bullets” when fresh. The last picture is of an N scale model offered by Dapol. Lionel 9154 Borden tank car anyone?

In the previous post, I made mention of how these wagons have weathered since being placed into service. Here's an image which provides a close up view of the contrast between the weathered surface and an area being kept clean so the data remains legible. A modeler who enjoys weathering equipment would have a field day with models of these.
