Just got home from work and saw this on my news feed. Sad news. I guess Willie is the only one of my childhood heroes left. I don't listen to "country" music anymore. Country radio has basically become just another pop station. Tonight I will put on one of his albums and raise a glass of bourbon to one of the greats.
Very sad news. I think I have a CD of all pretty famous Jimmy Rogers' train songs, done by Merle.
Yes, another great train man gone. He sang a lot of train songs, and sang them with a gut sound and gusto that came from the heart. He not only sang songs of trains, but trains played a very pivotal role in parts of his life. I am fortunate to have a country station here that plays the good, older, classic country music. They have been playing Merle's music all day, and I will never tire of it. Remember seeing him in concert back in the '70s, along with Willy and Waylon. Yes, another great train man has taken the cab ride in the sky.
Hear that Lonesome Whistle Blow.........

Glad I did not wait to see him. Went to his show Labor day in Fargo and then in Milwaukee. Those Dvds I have are prized possessions. Amazing voice and talent.
"One of these days when my has come,
You can take me back to where I'm from.
Put me on a Westbound train,
and ship me off in the pouring rain."
-from "Pledge Allegiance to the Hag" by Eric Chruch...lines sang by Merle.
Rather pertinent on a day like this.
RIP Merle.

After all, the man grew up in a boxcar ...
I recently watched a Merle Haggard concert on TV and recorded it. I've been watching it for the last couple weeks and just became a big fan. Great songs, great voice and a straightforward style. Going to get some CDs from the library and burn them. Grew up in a boxcar. That is classic. Kind of sad, but he certainly left a legacy.
