Flyer 290 and transformer question

I ended up getting a super deal on what turns out to be Flyer set 4904T, which is complete, save for missing the 639 box car (I can get one of those pretty readily) and the transformer has a dried out power cord. Engine and cars are in fantastic shape, the lot also came with some Plasticville buildings and a set of the remote switches. All for $75.00!

After cleaning and lubricating the 290 Pacific, she started running very well! I've always loved the "choo-choo" sound in AF trains! Hopefully the smoke unit will come back to life, too!

Anyway, should I check in Radio Shack or somewhere, what bulb is best to install in the 290?

Also, can a new power cord be put onto the transformer?

Use a 1449 bulb...It is 14v, a small globe, screw base bulb, get several and have some spares...

You might want to use a modern AC transformer and keep the one in the set as a conversation peice.

That was my first set as a kid. I still have it and this thread may motivate me get it off the shelf and run it.

I also agree with Brady to get a new transformer. The ones that came with the set weren't that good sixty years ago.

Thanks for the compliments and help so far! I have a bunch of transformers and all, but sometimes I get into this "completist" mode and try to get everything in a set to where its all together and working and all.

I'm not that worried about the transformer, as I'll probably be using one of my bigger ones when running the Flyer (this set joins my 1948 Royal Blue freight!)

But, I will be getting the bulb replaced and hopefully see if the smoke is still able to work.

Between this one and the Royal Blue, I'm enjoying running my Flyer S stuff!
