The engine sound effect is now garbled and muted somewhat, while the rest of the sound features work as normal - horn, bell, cab chatter, etc.
Is the chip bad somehow or is there something I can do to reset it so the sound comes back?
Tried both forms of reset; nothing changed.

Engine number? Possibly bad speaker or low battery.

The problem is almost certainly a degraded speaker, particularly if the engine has a 5 volt PS2 board.
MTH Has available replacement speakers for this engine that do not suffer from the same defect that caused many of the original 5 volt speakers in these engines to degrade.

What is the product number? To be of any help, we need to know if this is PS-1 or PS-2. If PS-2, the number will tell people if you are running a 5 volt board or a 3 volt board.
