I have recently acquired several feet of Gargraves STD track. I have three loops of USA tinplate track already. What are the pros and cons of using this track for a fourth loop? I have heard that some STD Gauges trains have issues, but I can't remember which ones.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob, I recall reading somewhere that some older, original pre-war STD Gauge locomotives may have wheel flanges that are too deep for Gargraves STD Gauge track -- which has a slightly lower rail height than regular tinplate track.  The result being those locomotives may leave small groove marks in the Gargraves wooden railroad ties.

Honestly, I don't know if this is true or folklore.  I do know that when I visited Carl Pettijohn's fabulous Std. Gauge layout last summer, I saw no evidence of such grooves.  And he had quite the collection of trains.

I plan to use Gargraves Std. Gauge track on my new layout, as I have no interest in acquiring any original, pre-war Std Gauge locomotives anyway -- even if this reported phenomenon were true.

David, thanks for the info. I do not currently own any prewar at this time, just remakes. Although, I could never rule anything out. I envy you getting to see that tremendous Standard Gauge layout. I have watched the video several times but not the same as live. The Cal State Railroad Museum is where I really got hooked on tinplate and STD Gauge.

Steve, will call you on my long commute home.

Thanks,
