Gasket

Pictures would be useful, since I don't have any reference material, it's hard to say.  FWIW, for some oddball gaskets, I have some 1/64" gasket sheet that I make them with.  Use the old mechanic's method, a small ballpeen hammer lightly tracing the outline on the gasket material and then cut it out.

I do not know but if push comes to shove, I believe liquid gasket in the auto stores may work. Or if you have the old one, trace it on similar material.

Thanks.  I got a 3oz tube.  Looks like that's what was originally.

In the past, I cut them out of thin cardboard, it seemed to work fine, and at least one I did is in house and it's lasted a few years.  I did graduate to the official gasket material, I figured that would last longer.

Made gaskets that way for years as some gaskets were no longer available.

I can tell you from experience, automotive gasket makers such as silicone, Indian glue, etc., do not work, and make a huge mess,….for whatever reason, smoke fluid attacks this stuff, and turns it into a slimy mess….As suggested, I’d cut a new gasket from gasket material. Personally, and for cheap insurance, I like to use F/R gasket paper,…( Fire Retardant )

I ordered a small tube of high temp liquid gasket and will report the results.  I had to replace both the wick and resistors in the unit which worked fine, but smoke was pouring out everywhere.  Looks like it was sealed with liquid as there was residue but no evidence of a gasket.

I doubt it was sealed with a liquid sealant.  I've been doing model train repairs for a long time, and I've had hundreds of smoke units apart from all the major manufacturers.  I've never seen liquid sealant used in any of them.  I have, however, seen many of them that when you take them apart the gasket comes out cleanly leaving no residue.  Those gaskets are generally reusable, but the ones that stick and come out in pieces need to be replaced.

He’s gonna regret using any kind of liquid or cream type sealants …..silicone swelled up so bad, it looked like a loaf of bread trying to escape from the oven!…..it’s amazing how smoke fluid is the one & only fluid that can destroy gasket maker……I did try it once on a bench test,….the next morning it looked like the blob was trying to eat the smoke unit,….and I only smeared the very edge of the bowl with a very thin coat,….the smoke unit went into the failed test bin at the foot of the bench,……😳

Pat, I actually bought a can of liquid gasket material, but never worked up the courage to try it.  I always fall back on making a gasket.

I tried it once a dozen years ago for S&G’s…..fail……be glad you didn’t bother.

Here's the final result.  At first I thought there wasn't a gasket because there was this yellowish residue on the tank.  Was it something extra?  After carefully filing around the perimeter the gasket felt smooth and in good shape.  Took a few minutes to make sure the new wicking was fully contained but it's working fine now.  I wonder if MTH ever had a replacement for this size gasket.

Since there are no pictures with any of your posts, it's hard to say if they had a gasket for it.  I'm a visual kind of guy, gasket doesn't describe it sufficiently.
