From the Lionel Service Manual:

 

When mounting wheels be careful to maintain the original distance between the wheel flanges. The precise distance depends on the length of the locomotive and varies from 1.265" in "scout" locomotives to 1.235" in 773 hudsons.

 

Folks brought me a lot of locos to rebuild they "disassembled" as kids. I'd generally set the wheels around 1.24" and there generally weren't any problems.

 

It's best to measure the spacing with a set of calipers before disassembly, then you'll know where to put them back when it's done.
