Hi all,  After about 10 years I finally have the room to start model railroading again.  I just dipped my toes in before so I got what little equipment I had before out to see what shape it was in.  I set up a oval of lionel fastrack with a mth z1000 and put my Williams FA2 on, worked great,  My old lionel 2065 sort of ran, no power at all but this loco was completely wore out when I got it years ago so I figured it would be dead no surprise there.  My big problem is my mth NYC mohawk proto sound 2.  I bought the engine new and it probably only has 5-7 hours on it.  When I put it on the track the sounds came on like normal but wouldn't move.  I installed a bcr powered it up and the bell came on and stayed on no matter what button I push.  I cleaned the track and wheels/pickups on the loco no change.  When I hit the direction button it would move very sluggish then make a few big sparks and stop.  I'm not very familiar with this electronic stuff is this loco dead already?  If not what else should I look at, everything is clean inside out and all wires in both tender and engine look good and connections seem tight.  I'm just at a loss.  Sorry for the long post and ones that may follow but I'm very much a rookie at this trying to learn.  Thanks

did you put the bcr in first or did you try running it on the battery and then went to the bcr?

I tried it with the battery before putting in the bcr.  I changed out the grease in the gearbox and went to oil not much of a change.  It looks like the sparks are coming from between the tender and engine or from around the cab area of engine not the pickups.  The last time I tried it it also started throwing a stale burnt smell.  The sounds still work, bell always on  but I haven't tried to move it again since the smell started.

you might have scrambled the board.  how many bells rang when it was on the battery

Since it is protosound 2, this The "three clanks of death" do not apply.

But it would be best if you posted the item number for your Mohawk so that we can further diagnose your engine problems and determine if you did "scramble" the boards. Also, you should probably post this is the MTH DCS and PS2/PS3 section. Thank you,

Nickstrains.
