I recently purchased the two subject cars (Santa Fe green livery) on eBay.  The were a bit beat up, but was able to repair them.

I have checked the internet and GGD web site for information concerning what train set they may have been part of, but cannot find anything.  Does anyone know the manufacture history and whether addition Santa Fe Madison cars are available?

Thanks,

GGD delivered individual heavyweight cars in September of 2007, one of which was lettered St. Alexis and one was St. Albans. The 8-1-2s were offered three years later.  I didn't know GGD passenger cars were offered in Santa Fe Green. Our Santa Fe 12-1s and 8-1-2s are Pullman Green with gold graphics.  All GGD cars are available.  You might consider using the Wanted to Buy Forum or 3RS Forum.  John in Lansing, ILL

Thanks for the information.  The train I am putting together is pulled by an MTH 4-8-4 SF oil burner locomotive, and the consist so far is a GGD Pullman baggage car 18", MTH Santa Fe RPO 18", MTH Santa Fe combine 18", MTH Santa Fe coach 18", the GGD St. Alexus & St Anthony 21", and the GGD Pullman sleeper/observation 21" named the Robert Peary, which sounds like an East Coast Pullman vs. West Coast equipment.

I guess I will begin the search for the GGD  Santa Fe baggage car, the GGD Santa Fe Observation and some additional 21" coaches.  Any suggestions as to locating the GGD cars would be appreciated.

Also, I have lived only in the Midwest and Washington, D.C. areas and other than the Super Chief, am not all that familiar with the Santa Fe RR. With this handicap I am trying to figure out what SF train I am creating and what its route would be assigned to.  The the SF loco was a gift.

You didn't say whether they are all heavyweight cars, or a mixture of heavyweight and lightweight cars.  Santa Fe's heavyweight observation cars ran mainly on the Chief, the Grand Canyon, and the California Limited, although they sometimes were used on other trains.

Thanks for the information.  The cars are all heavyweights.  I assume the Chief was in use prior to the introduction of the diesels.  If so, how many passenger cars would the Chief (pulled by a steam locomotive) be able to carry?

My next project is to dig up information on the "Jackie Gleason Express", which, if the story is true, he supposedly persuaded CBS television to bankroll his private Santa Fe party train from LA to New York.  It might be an interesting modeling project

Does anyone know the significance/origin of the names of the saints for the GGD Santa Fe cars?  I am familiar with St. Francis and am pretty sure that most of the Spanish mission churches in California were founded by the Franciscan order.  My first thought was that the other other three saints may have been Franciscians also.  Checked St. Alexis and found he was of the very early church and could not have been a member of the as yet to be establish Franciscan order.

Also produced by Golden Gate Depot in the Santa Fe Road Name was the head end set. Combine, RPO and Baggage.

The Diner/Observation options were also offered on a second run.

The coaches (sold in four packs) as well as the sleepers offered only once I believe.

As was mentioned above, these were all produced in "Pullman Green" and not Santa Fe Green. Close, but not the same.
