The IR tether is a single channel one-way link. Since many (most?) upgrades put more or all of the electronics in the tender, this isn't a practical solution. The only thing the IR link does in Lionel locomotives is send the serial data back to the tender for the audio, and in the case of the VL-BB, the depleting coal load.

The MTH tether is not actually without "wires". Flexible conductors have been replaced with a printed circuit.

For Lionel OEM products the Command board and Motor driver are in the engine and you only need to communicate to the tender Sound system.
ERR and MTH are different constructs and hardwire is needed, though new PS-3 does open the door, but MTH stuff usually communicates both ways I believe.
The other thing is power. MTH would need to add rollers on both units and they also like to link the PV and PCB Grounds between boards. Probably would need a new design, though I do think PS-3 Steam would be a possible implementation. G
