I just received my new Weaver 2-8-0 Consolidation and have problems already.  Sound familiar?  Well, I have had pretty good luck with the engines I have purchased until now.  When I took the engine out of the box I thought WOW very NICE.  Until I saw the side rods, all of them corroded on the left side.  Then I put it on the track and power it up...nuttin.  I finally figured it out it's the electric connector between the tender and engine.  It won't lock into the port on the engine side.  As soon as it hits a different piece of track ie. straight into curved or curved into straight it's just enough to shift the wires and pull the connector ever sooooo slightly apart and stop the engine.

So, my question for anyone out there is, what can be done to keep the electric connector tightly connected to the engine?  It doesn't have any kind of snap on it.  It looks like just a friction fit.  But, it's just a weeeee bit loose.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,  Rick

I would definitely call the dealer (or Weaver) and discuss it with them. Even if you could crimp the loose connection, it could possibly be a headache from now on. And then there is still the side rods. I have heard a lot of good things about Weaver, so I am sure you will be taken care of.

I am like you, I've yet to have a problem with an new engine, and I have purchased a few in the last 3-4 years. But, it's probably only a matter of time before the same thing happens to me (fingers crossed tightly).

Hi guys,  thanks to all that responded.

I didn't have to call Weaver.  I took the tender apart and saw that the tether wires were attached to the circuit board with a zip tie.  This caused the tether to exit the tender kind of skewed to the right.  So, it was never connected to the engine straight.  I cut the zip tie and removed it.  This caused the tether to relax and straighten out.  Once I reconnected the tether to the engine it worked great.

As far as the corrosion, I disassembled the rods as much as I could and sanded off the corrosion and repainted them.  They now look great as well.  As long as I got all the corrosion off I should be in good shape.

Oh, one other thing I forgot to mention yesterday is that this engine is from 2007.  I bought it as New Old Stock.  The box was never opened and still wrapped in the original cellophane.  I'll post a pic in next weeks Weekend Photo Fun.

Thanks again,  Rick
