Well, I went to the flea market and found a railroad lantern. On the way home, my wife asked me how old it was. I said I had no idea but I knew some people that could help us out. This is a handlan made in St. Louis. No railroad name on it. What year was a lantern like this used? Also, are there different types? Being red, I’m guessing a brakeman lan??

It looks like a Handland 2000 utility lantern rather than a brakeman/switchman lantern. I don't think crew lanterns generally used a Fresnel globe.
Also, the reservoir is much larger than what I've seen for switchman/brakemen lanterns.

Just my opinion but, that is NOT a "railroad lantern". Looks more like something one would see in the marine industry.
Thanks Rusty. I see you’re point. Chances are this may not have came with a red globe. Wife is still asking me age. Im on a quest now to find out what type of lamp was used by who and maybe time periods to
Hot water. I did a search and looked at lantern a little closer. It’s not a railroad lantern
There is no lantern video on this channel.
Yes, that is not a railroad lantern. It was a probably used as a construction lantern. The larger font would allow for overnight burning. The railroad did use fresnel type globes, such as the one in your lantern. The lantern is from the 1940's.
